How to save thousands
on a new kitchen
Our kitchens have changed dramatically over time. Drawers have got wider,
appliances are smarter and you can now make a cup of tea straight from the tap.
But, despite years of innovation, much of
what we do in the kitchen has remained
a constant. We still need a sink and a tap
and a work surface. We rely on ovens to
heat, dishwashers to clean and fridges to
keep everything fresh. And, of course, we
need cupboards to store all our pots and
pans, as well as the myriad implements and
ingredients every home cook requires.
So, while features improve and benefits
increase, the layout of our kitchens remain
the same. And it’s the ‘work triangle’ we
have to thank for that. Any kitchen designer
worth their salt will abide by this decades-
old industry standard: that the three most
important work stations in a kitchen – the
sink, the oven and the fridge – should be
positioned a set distance from each other.
All of which raises the question most
kitchen companies would prefer we didn’t
ask: if the layout of our kitchens are just as
they should be, then why bother changing
the cupboards? After all, they’re just wooden
boxes. And they’re already in the right place.
But not every kitchen company is the
same. There are those, like national kitchen
facelift retailer Dream Doors, that do things
a little differently. Dream Doors specialises in
kitchen makeovers which, typically, involves
swapping the doors and drawer fronts with
made-to-measure replacements, then adding
new work surfaces, a sink and taps. Crucially,
though, the existing base and wall units
remain untouched.
Does it work? Well Dream Doors was
established in the late ‘90’s, has more than 50
franchised showrooms nationwide – including
one in Oxfordshire – and tens-of-thousands of
satisfied customers to its name. And it’s easy
to understand why. By choosing a kitchen
facelift those customers saved thousands of
pounds. They also saved time (most Dream
Doors makeovers are installed in just a couple
of days) and avoided all of the stress and
upheaval that accompanies a full kitchen refit.
Dream Doors Oxford, based in Abingdon’s
Stert Street, is a family-run business owned
by Elaine and Mike Hurley.
Now in their fifth year of trading, Elaine
explains why it isn’t just the time and money-
saving advantages that attracts customers
into their showroom.
“Most people are looking for reassurance,”
says Elaine. “They want to know they can
trust us with their homes and that we’ll deliver
on our promises. Customers also appreciate
the fact that we’re local business owners.
That we’re accountable.”
The couple host regular cooking
demonstrations at their showroom. They also
welcome feedback through the independent
consumer monitoring website, Checkatrade.
com, getting average score of 9.7 out of 10.
A customer in Wallingford gave the Hurleys
top marks recently, writing: “I can’t fault them
in any way. The job was completed to a very
high standard within the scheduled time.
Perfect!”
