Waterperry Gardens
The Gallery is housed in an 18th century
listed barn on an estate that includes
eight acres of ornamental gardens. These
gardens were established in the early 20th
century by the renowned horticulturist and
educator, Beatrix Havergal. The estate
provides the setting for the internationally
acclaimed annual Art in Action festival which
attracts more than 25,000 visitors. However,
when the tents have all gone and the artists
have left, the Gallery remains as a hub for
local artisans.
Creative arts represented include ceramics,
glass, jewellery, painting, printmaking, textiles
and woodcarving including artists such as
ceramicists John Leach, Simon and Bryony

Rich, and Pru Green. The art of glassblowing
is represented by the world-renowned Peter
Layton. There is also a moveable feast
of printmakers that includes Jane Peart,
Diana Ashdown, Flora McLachlan, Merlyn
Chesterman and Jane Walker. Painters
include established local favourites Ken
Messer and Valerie Petts as well as the
award-winning Carole Griffin. However, work
from new artists is a priority – in May this year,
the Gallery will exhibit a series of paintings
from artist Julie Collins.
Woodcarvings by Andy Peters, one of
Britain’s last ship’s carvers (recently seen in
Britain and the Sea
) are on display whilst
exquisite boxes in sycamore, olive and apple
are made by Devon-based cabinet-maker
Edward Wild. Unique wirework sculptures
by local artist Rachel Ducker range from the
Lilliputian to lifesize.
Oxfordshire Artweeks promotes homegrown
artists, so alongside Gallery regulars this year
the work of local potter Harriet Coleridge
will be featured together with a selection
of brand new works by gifted textile artist,
Rachel Wright.
The Gallery is a destination for those
seeking something special and for many this
means jewellery handmade by artists. With
well over twenty jewellers’ work on display
the array of artists includes many who show
at Goldsmiths’ Annual Exhibition in London
e.g. Jane Adam, Jean-Scott Moncrieff, Grace
Girvan, Katie Roberts and Guen Palmer.
The works on display change constantly
and new Gallery exhibitions will co-incide
with Art in Action in July as well as themed
exhibitions in October and November.
Details will appear on the website.

The Gallery at Waterperry Gardens was established over twenty years ago with the
declared purpose of “providing a showcase for the unique”. Specifically, an outlet for
