In it for the long haul
Established in 2002, serving
Carterton, Witney and the
surrounding Oxfordshire areas,
Charlie’s Taxis was taken over
in 2013 by local entrepreneurs
Robert and Julie Clifton. They
brought in John Woodward as
General Manager with a view to
renew the face of the company,
provoking a new booking system,
phone structure, and new
prestigious cars.
The Crier met up with John who
treated us to a spin in a Jaguar
XR while we talked.
Charlie’s Taxis do run a regular
taxi service on Friday and
Saturday nights, but this is
not the primary focus of the
business. “Our main basis is long
haul driving,” John says. “We
go all over the country doing
it.” This could be anything from
delivering a package somewhere
to dropping off or picking up
somebody from an airport.
“All our drivers are DBS checked,”
the General Manager says. “You
have to be DBS checked anyway
for your taxi badge, but we do
a lot of social care runs for the
council, so enhanced DBS checks
have been done on our drivers,
allowing us to carry children and
vulnerable adults…we’ve had
every background check you can
possibly imagine.”
Our drive with John ended far
too soon for us, we like plush
surroundings here, but what with
Charlie’s Taxis needing 15 cars for
all its duties (it only had four in
2013 showing rather impressive
growth), he probably had a fair
bit of work to be getting on with.
