Sergeant Rachael Robinson – Winchman
Rachael was only 19 when she joined the armed forces in 1995. During her career
she saw active service in Iraq. She is also a friend of Prince William after she spent
some time with him while serving in the Falklands. She eventually worked her way
through various jobs within the RAF to become the UKs only fully trained female
Winchman. As the name suggests, hanging from a helicopter to carry out daring
rescues is a job normally done by men. But last
year she was called out to a stranded fishing
boat off the coast of Wales. A crew member was
stranded on the boat with head injuries which
was buffeted around on 40ft waves. Rachael had
six attempts to try and rescue him before they
had to nip back to the base for more fuel. On
their return, she had two more attempts and
finally managed to winch the man to safety. She
was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for
the rescue.

DRIVING
FORWARD
We are recruiting now for on-call
firefighters to work supporting
their local communities.
On-call firefighters are men and women who may have other
jobs and are able to provide evening, daytime or weekend
cover. They are ready to go out to a call the moment a
message comes through to their pager. On-call firefighters
live or work within 5 minutes of their local fire station, are
18 and over and have an all round level of fitness – no formal
qualifications are required
We want to attract enthusiastic individuals who have a real
desire to serve the community in which they live or work and
more importantly have the potential to become professional
firefighters. We pride ourselves on being a forward thinking
organisation, challenging the typical stereotypes of what a
firefighter should be. To enable us to achieve this and reflect
the community we serve, we require men and women from
all social and cultural backgrounds to join us.
Fire fighting is not like any other job. It can be
unpredictable, exciting and rewarding coupled with
the satisfaction and respect that comes with providing
a crucial service to your local community.
