The new BNP?
There is no doubt about it – the BNP are no longer a threat. Since the far-right party’s
heyday in the late 2000’s, financial woes and a leadership crisis have brought the party to its
knees. But as the recent European elections have proved, the far-right is alive and well and
although one party has stolen the headlines, there are many others lurking in the shadows as
well.
For many, the BNP did serve one good purpose – if you wanted to know where the bigoted
and racist politicians were, you only needed to look in one place! But since 2009, the BNP
has been in a steep decline. This does not mean, however, that there are fewer far-right
supporters and politicians. Like a seedpod popping, the deterioration of the BNP has seen the
far-right scattered into several different locations.
All eyes are looking for the next BNP and asking what seemingly acceptable party with a
central core of hate and prejudice will be next to garner a large voting public.
