ALEX
At the end of June I handed
over the reigns of the BFBS
BN Breakfast Show to Hermina
Campbell so I could head off to sunnier
climes to work on BFBS Radio’s ‘Ops’
service. Since ouR studios left the site
of Camp Bastion BFBS has maintained
a service to those still serving in
Afghanistan and the Middle East. These
bespoke programmes now come from our
studios at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, which is
where I am right now.
I’m presenting our ‘Ops Breakfast’ show which
goes out in Afghanistan at normal breakfast show
time, but starts in Cyprus at 5am (3am in the UK). The show is for those still
serving out on operations but can also be heard here on BFBS BN. I’m on before
Hermina starts the Breakfast show in Oxfordshire. I was thinking for a long time
about what I’d want to hear on BFBS if I was serving on operations around the
world. After talking to my mates in the RAF, and presenters who have done the
show before, I’ve been trying to keep everyone in touch with what’s going on
back home – news, entertainment and everything else that’s going on in the
Forces world! Broadcasting this service from Cyprus is an interesting challenge
as it’s easy to talk about a community you live in like at Brize where you breathe
it every day; here my job will be to make sure I don’t sound too Cyprus heavy and
remember who I’m talking to and where they are.
In other news, BFBS BN has been awarded its FM license to broadcast locally
from Brize on an FM frequency. This means more people will be able to listen,
including in your car if you don’t have a DAB receiver. We will continue to
broadcast across the county of Oxfordshire on DAB but our FM license means
we can reach an even bigger audience in the local community of Carterton.
See you when I’m back.
