Member of the Association
of British Investigators
got me back into actually doing art,”
he says.
It seems though that you’re not
exempt from criticism however
old you are. “One time I was doing
a watercolour and I did some
highlights in pastel,” Mel says. It
seems this is a no-no. “Eva went
berserk,” he says chuckling.
“You were retired and you were
being shouted at?” I ask.
“A lot of people don't like being
criticised,” he answers. “I don't like
it either really but what you learn
in art is constructive criticism is
acceptable.
“My mentor at art school had a
blue crayon type pencil,” the artist
continues. “I did this drawing of
Salisbury Cathedral and I was very
proud of it. He came up to me, ‘your
perspectives are wrong,’ he said.”
Mel then acts out his mentor using
the pencil he remembers still now
to deface his artwork, so as to show
him where he had missed the mark.
“He'd put a sodding great line right
through this thing I'd taken three
hours to draw. But he was right, I
could see straight away where I'd
gone wrong, you have to learn to live
with that sort
of thing.”
Mel Tinton’s art is usually displayed
and can be purchased at Carterton
Lions’ annual open art exhibition. A
visit to his home though, and this is
not an open invitation, hospitable as
he is, grants you access to a far more
extensive range of the man’s work.
A small room out the back, in which
classical music plays on the radio, is
host to a load of impressive pieces.
And as I leave he draws my attention
to a picture of Salisbury Cathedral
hanging on the staircase wall…the
perspectives look spot on.
