Carterton Crier Issue 3_Lowres - page 54

News from New Zealand
Jan Farr from the Carterton Crier, New
Zealand writes the first in a series of
updates from overseas.
Carterton is a town of 5,030 residents
in the Wairarapa farmlands, north of
Wellington. In the 1850s the area, with
a significant Maori population, also
became home to British immigrants.
The Carterton Crier (aged about 16)
aims to reflect our diverse community
through its unremarked, but seldom
unremarkable, stories.
We are, of course, connected to the
UK, through blood and through our
founder Charles Rooking Carter, born
in Kendal, Westmorland. He was a
builder, supporter of the Chartist
movement, and a self-educated
man who came here in 1850 with
his wife Jane. We recorded the
recent unveiling of his statue in
Carterton, which was welcomed by
the community and by an enthusiastic
Maori kapa haka group from Carterton
Primary School.

The Time for a Cuppa
campaign raises money
for the UK’s leading
dementia charity. The
money raised supports
their work, which includes
one-to-one support
and expert advice. The
charity has a unique
nursing service – Admiral
Nursing – which finds
specialist support for
dementia patients across
the UK. The charity
offers information on
other sources of support
available for patients and
their families as well.
In just a couple of hours
we raised a fantastic total
of £340.
