LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week
Preparations are already under way for LGBT
Adoption and Fostering Week 2015, which
will take place March 2nd-8th. Hundreds of
potential LGBT adoptive parents and foster
carers will learn about the process, hear real
stories from parents and carers and have
their questions answered. They’ll have the
opportunity to mingle with other prospective
parents and foster carers and meet agencies
face to face. We also know that these events
help to allay many of the fears people may
have about the process and how they will be
treated as part of the LGBT community. We
think that those are some of the things that
make this event special and we’re not the only
ones who think so. Last year, Srabani Sen,
chief executive of the British Association of
Adoption and Fostering wrote:
“The British Association for Adoption &
Fostering (BAAF) is delighted to support
New Family Social and LGBT Fostering and
Adoption week. With over 90,000 children in
care across the UK, 6,000 of whom need to be
adopted; there has never been a greater need
for more adopters and foster carers to come
forward. We know that members of the LGBT
community make fantastic parents, helping
children to flourish. Hopefully this campaign
will inspire people to give a vulnerable child or
children a safe, secure and loving home.”
We are also hoping that the events held
around the country will not only encourage
more LGBT people to become adopters and
foster carers, but will also raise awareness of
LGBT Adoption and Fostering through its
presence in the media. Last year’s event was
bigger than ever, with 129 items of media
coverage, a twitter reach of almost 3.5 million
people and was launched simultaneously with
our brand new NFS Magazine and the results
of our New Family Social survey, which was
conducted in the run up to our adoption and
fostering week. Approximately 150 potential
adopters and foster carers attended our
Manchester and London flagship events and a
further 60 or more agency-run events were held
nationally during the week.
