Welcome
The Duke of Edinburgh and Boris Johnson are loved by the nation
because they quite often say ludicrous things. The Duke once said
some African art looked like something his young daughter would bring
back from school art lessons. He also once asked a Kenyan lady ‘you are
a woman, aren’t you?’ Boris adds a bit of physical comedy to his gaffs.
Who can forget the zip-wire incident of 2012? He is also a master of
the verbal slips, having once described George W Bush as a ‘cross-eyed
Texan warmonger’. And then there was the day he had to apologise to
the whole of Liverpool!
I can only guess that seeing the popularity of ‘the gaff’, UKIP decided
to use this verbal mechanism as their main campaigning policy! In
the run-up to the election, there were daily racist and homophobic
remarks that were so blatant, there was an air of hilarity about them.
And within a few days of being elected, a UKIP councillor got himself
sacked for calling all LGBTs ‘perverts’. How bad do you have to be to
get sacked within a week of starting a new job!
But it isn’t just a joke really. The fact so many voters are prepared to
sweep these terrible remarks under the carpet just because they agree
with other party policies is a bit of a worry. And it’s true that it is not
the party that is the problem, but the people it attracts. UKIP have
once again introduced homophobia into British politics and that is a
great shame as this time last year, it looked as though we had almost
stamped out the bigots.
However, there is an antidote to all this homophobia – the good old
pride event! It is once again the time of year when we cover ourselves
in golden glitter and wrap a rainbow flag around our naughty bits before
walking through the town centre blowing a whistle.
The list of pride events taking place this year is phenomenal. And this
year, I feel as though it is important to get out there and join a parade
to show that despite the massive gains the far-right has made recently,
we are definitely not a country that supports homophobia.
Hope you have a good summer and don’t forget the sun cream!
