Community – Offering you peace
of mind at work
When things start to get a bit difficult in the
workplace, it can be hard to know where
to turn. Community is a union which can
offer advice and information when you
most need it, whatever industry you are in.
Fyne Times speaks to John Park, Assistant
General Secretary
“Community has celebrated its 10th birthday
this year. The British Union of Social Work
Employees and the Prison Service Union
are two of the unions that have joined
Community in the past ten years.
We represent workers right across the UK
economy: from the NSPCC to betting
shop workers; steelworkers to prison
officers. Community also has members in
traditional industries, such as footwear
and textiles, and we are reaching out to
new members in service industries such as
private postal services. We also specialise
in representing disabled workers in
supported employment businesses.
Our mission is to empower working people
to create better communities. We believe in
working with employers and businesses in the
best interests of their employees. People turn
to Community for independent advice and
support on issues at work. Community has a
team of advisors who deal with wide-ranging
queries from workplace bullying to retraining,
disciplinary proceedings to contract changes.
Trained representatives are on hand to
support members at meetings with their
employers and our members get free access to
legal advice and representation at work.
Community doesn’t just support our members
in their workplaces, we want to help make
their communities better too. That’s why
we have a fund which supports good causes
where our members live and work. We also
look to the future, offering higher education
bursaries to our members and their children
and creating and promoting apprenticeships.
Our campaigns focus on making the
workplace a happier and more secure place
to be. We are a living wage employer and
campaigner. We run campaigns that make
a difference to the lives of our members.
This might be trying to create safer betting
shops, running anti-bullying campaigns in
the voluntary sector or trying to save jobs in
manufacturing. We were also proud to be a
primary sponsor of the campaign for equal
marriage in Scotland.
If you need a source of independent advice
about your employment and you want peace
of mind at work, then join a union that can
help you.”
