welcome
It’s that time of year. The days get longer, the sky gets brighter and for our front cover we replace
Martin Loader’s beautiful photograph of Carterton in the snow with one of Emma Gray’s typically
expert shots of the town as spring shows its face.
As winter reached its end so too did the Carterton Community Magazine. Thus we would like
to pay tribute to this publication which released its last issue in March after 40 years of serving
the town. Full of admiration for the positive impact a small group of people have had across
four decades, we’ll burst with pride here if the Crier achieves even half the longevity Carterton
Community had.
The Carterton Community Magazine made Cartonians aware of what was going on in their town,
and we aim to do the same. To that end, in this issue we’ve covered a whole array of events taking
place over the coming months, bringing you details of Fake Festival (coming to Carterton for the
first time this year in celebration of Armed Forces Day), John Lawson’s Circus and much more.
This edition also marks the beginning of what we hope will be a wonderfully long relationship with
another Carterton Crier…within these pages is the first of a regular contribution from overseas that
informs us of what is happening in Carterton, New Zealand.
On the topic of regulars, this time round the festival director of Oxfordshire Artweeks, Esther
Lafferty, has written two pieces for our C
art
erton feature, the late Robin Cartwright is the subject
of A Carterton Character and we paid a visit to ex-Mayor Mary Johnson Clarke who inhabits this
publication as A Carterton Great.
Another thing; we must say a big thank you to all those who braved the rain on 16th April for
the Freedom of Carterton. What a beautiful ceremony and confirmation of the strong friendship
between Carterton and RAF Brize Norton – there’s more on the event further on in this issue.
Will the Crier be active for as long as the Carterton Community Magazine? Who knows?
But we’re here for now, for spring, for Carterton – hope you enjoy us.
