There’s roughly 2000-3000 people
who live in Carterton but don’t drink
in Carterton. If you’re in that group, it
is this micro-alehouse’s aim to get you
drinking here again. “We’re changing
our ales all the time” says Phil. There
are so many different ales in circulation;
when Phil opens his doors on a Monday
morning there’ll be three reps outside
wanting to sell him their produce. It’s
not just the beverages that make this
place what it is. “It’s a nice relaxed
atmosphere – it’s got a good vibe to it.
People like to come in because they
can talk; they're not going to have their
ears bleeding because of loud music
or television: that’s not what we’re
about”. However, being a place that is
not restricted by certain rules, the Siege
still showed the Rugby World Cup this
year despite the micropub bible banning
television. Further, the bar serves spirits;
they are sourced from all around the
globe: before Phil spoke to the Crier he
had been on the phone to a supplier in
Norway discussing vodka. In essence,
this venue is new and quirky but does
not go so far as to blacklist typical things
that people do like to see in their pubs.
Recently the Siege was gripped with
Beer Pong Fever as 32 teams battled to
win a 3 night trip to Prague to visit the
Royal Krusovice Brewery. There’s more
coming up, including a charity auction
in November, plus Halloween and
Christmas parties. The Siege will also
be sponsoring Carterton Town Council’s
Christmas lights switch-on. On the last
Sunday of every month, there is a chill-
out evening with live music; November
will feature James Morgan who recently
appeared at Shop Carterton Day putting
his own spin on The Fresh Prince of Bel
Air and Arthur theme tunes.
