LGBT History Month 2016 – Religion,
Belief and Philosophy
LGBT History Month is celebrated every
February in the UK and aims to showcase the
achievements of the LGBT community past
and present. This year’s theme is Religion,
Belief and Philosophy, which reaches right
to the core of a prejudice that has existed
for thousands of years and directly questions
the main justifications for bigotry which the
community still faces today.
Living as an LGBT in the UK has certainly
improved greatly since the start of LGBT
History Month in February 2005. With the
advent of civil partnerships and now same-sex
marriage as well as other pieces of legislation
such as the Equality Act 2010, there is more
protection of LGBT rights in the UK than
ever.
However, this does not mean the fight is over.
There are still gaping gaps in legislation and
social understanding for trans people and for
all LGBTs, prejudice is still a spectre that
can suddenly appear at any point in day to
day life. Religion is one of the main areas
where prejudice seeks out a justification and
so it is fitting that this year’s LGBT History
Month aims to face that prejudice head on.
The month will also explore how sexuality
and religion can actually stand side-by-side in
a positive way and how philosophy can help
fight misunderstanding by prompting important
discussions about what it means to be LGBT in
today’s society.
The LGBT History Month Showcase (formerly
known as the launch) for 2016 will be held
at Queens’ College at The University of
Cambridge on Thursday the 26th of November
2015.
The Showcase, presented by Schools OUT
UK, will include lessons that usualise LGBT
people in the morning, training for teachers
and youth workers in the afternoon, a teatime
market place with stalls run by Stakeholders in
LGBT Equality such as CHE, GIRES and the
ATL, UCU and NUT, followed by an evening
of information and entertainment on the 2016
theme of Religion, Belief and Philosophy.
Amongst the many treats in store, LGBT
History Month patron and legendary singer/
songwriter Labi Siffre will be performing.
Cambridge City Council are among the event’s
sponsors. The Pink Punters’ Rainbow Bus
shall be in the Market Place throughout the
course of the day to point people in the right
direction.
Tony Fenwick, CEO of Schools OUT UK said,
“Cambridge came to us and we are thrilled to
be hosting our annual showcase at one of the
University’s finest and most central colleges.
Queens’ is Stephen Fry’s alma mater and
its environs provide buildings of enormous
splendour and historic importance that can
house some of our events, while the daytime
workshops and evening presentations can be
housed in the fully-equipped modern buildings
on the other side of the Mathematical Bridge”.
Steve Boyce, coordinator of this year’s
Showcase and Head of Trustees for Schools
OUT UK added, “The goodwill and enthusiasm
of the City and of the staff at Queens’ has been
awesome. Furthermore, the University chapels
are firmly committed to LGBT Equality among
the other protected characteristics and they
have welcomed us with open arms.”
