Have you heard about the Radical Thinking season that will
be sweeping across Oxford this summer? The city’s top arts
organisations are banding together, creating a series of events to
celebrate the radical thinkers and world-changers who have called
Oxford home across the years.
Of course, not all the radicals of Oxford are in the past, even today
the city is rich with forward-thinkers and idealists: people willing
to stand up for their beliefs. Enter Chris Goode and Company, the
innovative theatre-makers who return to Oxford after last year’s
five-star success, Monkey Bars, to the North Wall. This time,
they’ve drawn on the inspiring, real-life stories of the people of
Oxford, taking their tales of courage and conscience and weaving
them together into an hour of scorching theatre: STAND.
Presented this May and June at the West Oxford Community
Centre, STAND will explore extraordinary moments of bravery from
everyday life, moments where ordinary people did what others
didn’t, or wouldn’t do. It’s at once both an intriguing glimpse into
some of the city’s most fascinatingly contentious issues, and a
celebration of the spirit that makes Oxford such an exciting place
to live.
It’s especially exciting to see Chris Goode working on this project;
he’s a phenomenal dramatist, having been called “A theatre-maker
of infinite talent and infinite compassion” by the Guardian, while
the Scotsman has referred to his theatre as “Genius at work.”
Oxford Playhouse is utterly thrilled to present what’s sure to be a
magically powerful piece of theatre; Producer, Michelle Walker, has
said: “Chris is one of the country’s most exciting theatre makers
and it’s a real adventure to have him creating something with a
unique Oxford resonance.”
