Music at Oxford’s 30th Anniversary
Concert Season Launch
Music at Oxford celebrates its 30th anniversary with a season
to remember. There is something for everyone, from orchestral
blockbusters to intimate solo recitals all performed in a variety of
Oxford’s most unique and atmospheric venues. To launch the season
Andris Nelsons conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra through a feast
of Brahms including Symphonies No 1 and 3. They continue their duo
of concerts in the New Year with Brahms’ Symphony No 4 and his
epic Second Piano Concerto showcased by Hélène Grimaud.
We celebrate Benjamin Britten’s centenary with an intriguing operatic
double-bill, the first ever fully staged opera in Music at Oxford’s
history. Nova Music Opera and its excellent cast perform Britten’s
haunting Curlew River alongside newly commissioned chamber
opera by multi award-winning composer Sally Beamish, Hagar in
the Wilderness. We continue celebrations in November by joining
together with Britten in Oxford to present the much-anticipated
Britten Birthday Concert, starring soprano Sophie Bevan with the
English Chamber Orchestra.
This season offers much for the early music enthusiast including a
fabulous concert with the Armonico Consort, Gillian Keith (soprano)
and Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet). Following this, the Orchestra
of the Age of Enlightenment perform with Contrapunctus and Queen’s
College Choir, Oxford in a programme of works by Handel and William
Croft; Croft’s Odes were first performed three hundred years ago in
the Sheldonian Theatre.
The Elias String Quartet return for the final three concerts in their
ambitious journey to perform the complete cycle of Beethoven
string quartets. The Beethoven Project, supported by the Borletti-
Buitoni Trust, began in 2012 and reviews so far have been universally
ecstatic. They visit Oxford in December, February and May.
Vocal excellence is celebrated this season with international
superstars Sarah Connolly and Ian Bostridge, and the return of the
Oxford Bach Choir for a performance of Bach’s St John Passion. Our
