BFBS Brize Norton Takes Flight
BFBS Brize Norton went live across the DAB digital radio airwaves of Oxfordshire in March,
broadcasting from new studios at the RAF station. The new BFBS Brize Norton schedule
includes local shows packed with music, community stories and news, plus programmes from
the BFBS Radio worldwide network.
The station can also be heard via DAB digital radio at RAF Benson, RAF Fairford, plus forces
locations in Abingdon, Didcot and Shrivenham, so our presenters will be out and about
reporting on the top military stories in the region. Presenter Alex Gill has moved from BFBS
Gibraltar to host the Brize Norton Breakfast Show, Monday to Friday between 06.30 and 10am.
“I’m really excited about working at the first RAF UK Bases station because I’m mega-nerdy
about aircraft,” said Alex. “I love how BFBS links the Armed Forces community around the
world. Coming from a forces background myself, I know how important that connection is.”
After Alex’s morning show, BFBS Brize Norton broadcasts the Total Ops Connection
programme, 10am-1pm from our studios in Afghanistan.
On weekday afternoons, our new presenter, Jo Thoenes, is live from the BFBS Brize Norton
studio from 1 until 4pm. Though the world of forces broadcasting may be unfamiliar territory,
Jo knows the local area extremely well. “Before this job I worked at BBC Oxford for seven
years,” she explained. “I’m excited about a brand new sound and product being introduced to
the Oxfordshire marketplace and finding out what it is that makes Brize Norton thrive.
“I’ve worked all over the world in sometimes very trying conditions, but joining BFBS – which is
a broadcast institution – will offer me all sorts of ‘firsts’ which I hope I can do justice to.”
Jo’s programme is followed by the BFBS Radio UK Bases Drive show from 4-7pm, with BFBS
Presenter, Rachel Cochrane. At weekends, BFBS Brize Norton will broadcast programmes from
the main BFBS Radio global network.
