Carterton Community College gets 16+ go-ahead
Carterton Community College has been given the go-ahead to start providing post-16 education. At a meeting
of the cabinet in March, Oxfordshire County Council approved the college’s plans to raise the upper age limit
beyond 16. The decision comes after open meetings and consultations took place to allow people who oppose
or support the plans to have their voice heard. The majority of respondents were in favour of extending the
school’s provision beyond 16 and preparations will now take place for A-level and BTEC qualifications to start
in September.
Cllrs Lynn Little (Mayor of Carterton), Mick Brennan and Henry Howard released a joint statement soon
after the decision was announced. “We are absolutely delighted to learn that Carterton Community College
has edged nearer in its quest for a Sixth Form and that Oxfordshire County Council are fully supportive of
the overwhelming case for Post 16 Education in Carterton. This is a pivotal time for both the school and the
community as a whole. We at the town council are committed to continuing and enhancing the excellent
partnership we have with the school and are convinced that this new development will ensure that the
children of Carterton and the surrounding villages are given the opportunity to receive a ‘whole school’
education in line with their cohorts around the county. Exciting plans are afoot and there has never been a
better time for the existing students or those ready to move up to secondary education.”
