Welcome
Welcome

Music is a part of everybody’s life. Like language,
food and breathing, music is something that you
can’t avoid. Whether it is the soundtrack to an
advert or a concert in the Albert Hall, we hear
music daily. One thing which unites us all is a
love of music. Some styles or genres may not be to our taste, but I think it
is a fair bet there has never been a human who truly hates ALL music. It’s
just not something you can universally hate.
Each year LGBT History Month focuses on a specific subject area from the
curriculum. 2013 was dedicated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Maths) and 2014 is dedicated to ‘Music’. And where better for the
pre-launch than one of the up-and-coming homes of music in the U.K, The
Birmingham Concert Hall.
The day will be a community educational celebration of all things music
and LGBT. The aim is to increase participation from all schools and the
community to highlight achievements of LGBT musicians through workshops
for school students, a schools concert and an evening extravaganza of
performances from high profile musicians, Birmingham schools, colleges and
universities, local bands, celebrities, MPs and key speakers.
The morning session will see students from across the UK attending a
carousel of workshops in which they will learn about some of the great and
good LGBT musicians from history, including Benjamin Britten, Ethel
Smyth, Bessie Smith and Angela Morley. In the afternoon, the students will
perform pieces that they have prepared in the morning session.
The evening will start with canapés before performances from the
Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra and talks from key speakers, including
MEP Michael Cashman. The afternoon performances are open to everyone.
28th November 2013 8.30am-10.00pm
Tickets for the evening event cost £5.
