“Helping many ex service
p rsonnel find employm nt”
Rapier sponsors Richie Oswin in the Help for Heroes 4x4 European Rally
Rapier sponsors 4x4 challenger
Abingdon based employment firm Rapier are
sponsoring ex-commercial driver Richie Oswin to
take part in an epic 4X4 challenge to raise money
for the Help for Heroes charity. Based in an army
town, Rapier has helped many ex-service personal
find employment, and so the challenge seems
fitting for them to sponsor.
The Help for Heroes 4×4 European Rally has now
raised over £734,000 (this total doesn’t include
gift aid) for the charity since its launch on Armed
Forces Day in 2010. Initially the idea of the Father
and Son organisers, Keith Bowen and Tim Price-
Bowen, was to run a one-off 4×4 event through
Europe, consisting of 10 vehicles and to raise
£20,000 for Help for Heroes. There was so much
interest in the first year that the numbers were
increased to 30 vehicles and then finally being
capped at 45 vehicles. Since 2010 this ‘one-off’
event has now turned into to an annual event,
averaging 40+ 4x4s taking part each year.
The general idea of having a route which follows
the path and tells the story of the WWII Allied
Invasion through Europe, also including some areas
of the ‘Western Front’ of WWI, stays the same each
year, but some elements are added and removed
each year just to keep the crews on their toes.
This 2000+mile/3200+km expedition now
encompasses 7 European countries over a period
of 12 days; concluding at Hitler’s impenetrable
Eagles’ Nest in Bavaria, Germany. This non-speed
touring assembly will be part military history
The event starts each year at 1100hrs from
Littlecote House Hotel – The vehicles start at 45
second intervals, with the first vehicle starting at
1130hrs. If you’re around on Saturday June 14th
2014 come along to the start of this year’s event
and support the teams as they depart on their
journey.
The reason that this venue is used as the start for
this event is due to the fact that in September 1943
the US 101st Airborne Division requisitioned part
of the house, and it became home to regimental
staff, regimental headquarters company, and
headquarters company of the 1st Battalion, 506th
Parachute Infantry Regiment.
