could be eligible for help. The widows of those who
served including those who undertook National
Service or those with dependents with additional
needs all fall under our criteria for help.
“Many question why the Government does not
do more to help veterans. While we sometimes
help people apply for appropriate benefits, many
veterans prefer to deal with someone outside of
the formal welfare system. We can often deal with
cases quicker than the welfare system and provide
face to face care, sometimes over an extended
period, to help people through difficult times.
“We are delighted to be among those benefiting
from the live screening from the Royal Albert
Hall. This was a timely reminder of the bravery
we expect from our military. We hope that those
who have been involved in more recent conflicts,
and the families who been affected, will be
remembered in a similar way in the coming years.”
Over 125 years of support
The vision and drive of one man stands at the
heart of the UK’s oldest Armed Forces charity. In
February 1885, as the Second Expeditionary Force
set sail for Egypt, Major James Gildea wrote to The
Times appealing for funds and volunteers to look
after families left behind. Within three months,
the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Families Association was
born. Since then, SSAFA has supported millions of
people, and millions more are eligible for help.
Through two World Wars and every subsequent
conflict involving Britain, SSAFA has been here for
our servicemen and women and their families. The
ability to adapt quickly to their needs is still at the
heart of everything they do. SSAFA never stand
still, so new services provide vital support wherever
and whenever it is most needed.
SSAFA is a charity that does whatever it takes to
get things done. They provide practical support and
assistance to servicemen and women, veterans,
and the families of both, every single day of the
year. SSAFA understand that your time in the
Forces can have an impact, now and in the future.
But the challenges everyone faces are different,
so whatever the problem is, SSAFA will find a way
to solve it.
