Could you save your Child’s life in an
Emergency?
More than one million children a year in the UK are involved in a serious accident in the home, let alone all the
other serious accidents that occur elsewhere. It only takes seconds for an accident to happen, but it takes a life
time to deal with the consequences of knowing that your child suffered…or worse…because you didn’t know
how to provide them Life Saving First Aid. Learning Emergency First Aid could save your Child’s life or that of
another loved one and it’s very easy.
It’s fair to say that most parents understand the importance of emergency first aid training but unfortunately
more than half end up putting it on the back burner and never ‘get round’ to it. This could be for many reasons:
Some chose to ignore the idea believing it will never be something they will need (until the life critical moment
they do), others think calling for an ambulance will be enough. But consider this..................
You discover your baby/child’s not breathing. You’re otherwise alone, with no knowledge of effective CPR.
What are you meant to do, push on their chest a bit? But where, how many times? You look at them lying
there, motionless and grey. You fumble frantically for your mobile phone, and with shaking hands unlock it, dial
999 and explain your location and the circumstances to the operator. The emergency call’s then processed
and dispatched to the nearest ambulance crew that happen to be standing by on the other side of town. On
receiving the call, the crew run downstairs, out of the building and into the ambulance. It then takes 4 minutes
for the crew to get through rush hour traffic to your location and park the ambulance in a safe place. A
few more seconds go by as the crew locate you. At least 6 minutes has passed at this point. A paramedic
immediately commences CPR on your loved one.
In this circumstance would your baby/child live and if they did survive would they be brain damaged from lack
of oxygen? Being that this is a hypothetical emergency it is of course impossible to say. But what is widely
accepted by professionals is that the best survival rates known are for casualties that received the earliest
possible effective CPR and Professional assistance.
