Real Life Alt Wedding:
Phiona & Neil Lees
Bride & Groom: Phiona & Neil Lees | Wedding Location: The Moat - Kent
“For our special day we wanted a theme which matched our
personalities. We went for a more metal-oriented soundtrack
throughout the occasion and chose a darker colour scheme,
opting for black petals scattered down the aisle, black
bridesmaid dresses and a cake which more resembled a gothic
castle than a traditional 3 tier wedding cake. The excellent
staff at “The Moat” - our pub/barn venue in Kent - encouraged
us to customise our experience in order to achieve our vision
of marital celebration.
Perhaps the most alternative aspect of our wedding was our
approach to musical entertainment. Rather than opting for
your typical ear-bleeding cheese-fest (which normally renders
me a quivering, drooling mess, hunched in a dark corner at
weddings), we were lucky enough to secure UK metal band
Death Remains to perform during the evening. I have my wife
Phiona to thank for discovering these guys in the first place!
The acoustics in the barn really made for an explosive sound
and soon after the set was under-way, everyone was happily
charging around and cheering! It was great to see that even
those people who wouldn’t typically spend their weekends
moshing were still getting involved. I believe we succeeded

in bringing that “metal gig” feel to our wedding, and what
an immense performance it was! At one point the crowd
even opened up for a wall of death, which I honestly believe
should be experienced in formal dress more often.
Aside from vowing to spend the rest of my life with the
woman of my dreams, my highlight of the day would have
to be knocking her mum onto the floor. When a wall of
death erupts around you, a certain level of excitement
often accompanies it (especially after a few ciders on your
wedding day). This is the kind of excitement which drives a
man to actively seek out the mother of the bride and tackle
her to the ground. Right from the initial planning phases, I
wanted to ensure our wedding was one of those few unique
occasions when flooring your mother in law is considered
acceptable.”
