As I write this, the debate over equal marriage is just about to start in
the Lords. You all have the advantage over me as you know exactly what
happened! It has been quite hard to put this magazine together, knowing that
this potentially life-changing amendment will be decided upon just as these
words are flowing through the printer, but we’ve tried.
The recent debates about equal marriage have brought to the surface attitudes
and prejudices that most of us thought were dead and buried. From links
between homosexuality and paedophilia to simple statements damming us
to hell, it’s already been quite a tough summer to be LGBT. If you believe
the homophobics, all gay people want to marry their sister or have a sexual
relationship with their dog. Apparently we are also responsible for the break-
down in the nuclear family, even though we haven’t ever had the option to
marry, let alone divorce!
This combined with a stupidly long spell of rubbish weather, you would expect
the LGBT community to be a little down-at-heel. However, one glance at our
Pride Diary suggests otherwise. If anything, this is the year when we will be
at out in force as the disparaging remarks have only served to make us more
unified (and also more ready for a darn good party!)
So in this issue of Fyne Times you can read about all the local Pride events so
you don’t miss a thing.
