Fyne Films
Winter is normally a great time for films as producers are aware cold weather makes a warm
cinema a rather appealing place to be! This year there are several good LGBT films out there,
some of which were recently featured in film festivals around the UK. Here are five films that
are worth a look this winter.
Hockney
The life and continuing work of artist David Hockney
is celebrated in a new BBC documentary directed by
Randall Wright. Acclaimed for a similar documentary
about Lucian Freud, Wright had access to Hockney’s
personal archive in order to help produce a fantastic
glimpse into the life of the pop art painter who
openly explored his own homosexuality in his work.
Controller of BBC Two, Kim Shillinglaw, said the
film “will be a riveting and inspiring watch” David
Hockney stands as one of Britain’s seminal and most
important artists, and I’m delighted to be showing this major film on him on BBC Two.” The film can
be seen in cinemas across the UK in November and will be on the BBC at some point in 2015.
Margarita, With A Straw
The Kalki Koechlin starrer ‘Margarita, With a Straw’
is a slice of life film wherein Laila embarks on the
journey to seek love and acceptance. The film’s
impressive ensemble cast includes Sayani Gupta
(Tasher Desh), who plays the feisty and beautiful
feminist with whom Laila embarks on a special
relationship, veteran Indian actress Revathy who
essays the role of Laila’s mother and British actor
William Moseley (Chronicles of Narnia), who shines
as Laila’s handsome friend Jared. The stirring musical
score is by the prolific Mikey McCleary with lyrics by
Prasoon Joshi and Anne Misawa delivers beautiful, vibrant cinematography. The film was screened
recently in London and will be released on DVD in 2015.
