Oxford High School
A stroll around Oxford High School after
lessons finish for the day or during the long
lunch break (plenty of time for a yummy
lunch and a club!) reveals girls involved in
every sort of club and activity on offer:
Bridge, football and eco-club; French
films, dissection and Korean; Lego robots,
debating and synchronised swimming.
The introduction of the Raspberry Pi Club
for budding computer programmers, the
Cooking Club in the new Orange Cafe at
the Junior School and the expansion of
our Dance Clubs with the arrival of our new
dance coach/choreographer have all proved
very popular additions this year.
Clubs are led by older students and staff
across the school with a typical OHS breadth
of imagination and quirkiness in the mix. At
the Junior School for example, in addition to
the highly successful Junior Chamber Choir,
some Year 10 girls suggested that they would
like to start a Rock Choir for younger girls.
Girls of all ages go to outdoor pursuit
centres at home and abroad, facing physical
challenges in all sorts of environments and
learning lessons of resilience and teamwork
which are readily transferred to other aspects
of life. Reception classes visit Hill End Camp,
Year 3 go orienteering in University Parks,
with courses devised by Year 9, Year 5 enjoy
water sports at Weymouth and Year 6 are off
to Chateau du Tertre, a French outdoor activity
centre. Year 7 and 8 all go to Somerset and
to Hadrian’s Wall, Year 9 will be embarking on
the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, and
older girls sign up for the now regular trek in
Nepal, with the Head on the staff team!
The list of international visits is always
tempting. Exchanges and visits to all the
countries whose languages we teach,
including China, Russia, Italy, France,
Germany and Spain; Classics trips to Italy
and Greece; Art in Amsterdam or Florence;
Economics and Politics in Washington and
New York – the list goes on and on.
