A level / Sixth Form Taster Day
HMC/SOH Co-Educational Day And Boarding School 3 To 18 Years
Google is only 16 years old. The world of
work is changing so fast – new sectors
are constantly emerging – and with them
come new jobs and patterns of work.
Today’s Sixth Formers need to be ready
to meet these challenges. How can they
achieve this?
Marina Kinson is Head of Sixth Form at
Rendcomb College Cirencester and she
talked to OX about the Rendcomb approach
to 16 + education.
The school has decided to offer a Sixth
Form Taster Day to help students try subjects
before making choices for A level. Taster
lessons are offered in a full range of A level
subjects, along with advice from teachers.
At Rendcomb College we offer not only
wonderful views but small class sizes,
excellent teaching and that all important
educational support. Sixth Form life here is
not just about working hard on academic
courses, it is also about being part of a friendly
and supportive community; contributing
to the leadership and development of the
school and trying new things. At the end of
two years, students will leave here informed,
confident and articulate, and ready for the
challenges of life.
My focus as Head of Sixth Form is on
academic progress. I work closely with
tutors and houseparents’ to ensure the
smooth transition into Sixth Form and
beyond. We encourage students to develop
a mature and independent approach to their
studies. Essential study skills, alongside
time management and organisation, are the
qualities that ensure our students’ success.
The teaching and range of subjects available
at Rendcomb College allows students to
pursue their passions, and facilitates entry to
the highest quality universities. The Extended
Project Qualification allows students to
embark on a largely self-directed and self-
motivated project which stretches and
challenges, again wonderful preparation for
university life.
Outside of academic lessons students
can develop their interests, interpersonal,
teamwork and leadership skills, through
programmes such as enrichment, extra-
curricular activities, Duke of Edinburgh
Scheme and Leadership training. Students
leaving our Sixth Form are enthusiastic,
well-grounded and versatile young men and
women, who are well equipped to take their
place in, and contribute to society.
