Like many other big houses, Thame Park was used for military purposes. It became a camp for soldiers
on their way across the country from training to join their comrades in France. For many, it would be one
of the last nights they ever spent in England
By the end of the war, the Ox and Bucks lost 5,880 men, won 59 battle honours and 2 Victoria Crosses.
There were also many others that served in different regiments who did not make it home from the
battlefields of France. From 13 in the village of Charney Bassett to almost 98 in Wallingford, their names
and thousands of others from South Oxfordshire are etched on memorials that will stand as a reminder
of their sacrifice for many years to come.
