Carterton Crier Issue 3_Lowres - page 22

When the Crier attended Carterton’s Christmas Lights Switch-On last year,
heavy rain made an appearance too. Then on 16th April 2016, when we turned up
to the Freedom of Carterton, the weather was again not kind, provoking much
shivering and opening of umbrellas. We worry we’re bringing gloomy skies and
chilliness with us to these events.
But we don’t worry about the lack of dedication in this town. However cold
and wet it is, the people of Carterton will turn up to an outdoor event if it’s for
something that deserves to be celebrated.
Hence those lining Alvescot Road to see RAF Brize Norton granted the Freedom
of Carterton, as Mayor Lynn Little says, “in recognition of the station’s continuing
support to the community.” Officially opened on 13th August 1937, RAF BN now
has the right to march into the town “with drums beating, colours flying and
bayonets fixed.”
