Carterton Crier Issue 3_Lowres - page 21

2016 is the 100th anniversary of
Kelmscott forming the first Women’s
Institute in Oxfordshire; this was just
one year after the formation of the
organisation in Britain. May Morris was
the Kelmscott branch’s first president,
and she continued to be heavily
involved with it until her death in 1938,
initiating and participating in all kinds
of activities designed to improve the
lot of Kelmscott’s women.
This year Kelmscott Manor will be
presenting a small display of photos
and books from the early years of the
Kelmscott WI which we hope will be of
interest to all our visitors. The Manor
opened its doors for the 2016 season
on Saturday 2nd April and is open
every Wednesday and Saturday 11am-
5pm until the end of October.
Throughout the coming months we
will also be hosting a number of family
days with drop-in activities as well as
interesting talks on people associated
with the Morris family and the Manor.
Kelmscott Manor also boasts
enchanting riverside gardens and the
River Thames is located just a few
hundred yards away. The Tearoom,
with its friendly staff and delicious
home-made meals and cakes, is a
must, whilst the Shop is packed with
decorative and unusual items ideal for
gifts or mementoes.
Kelmscott Manor is owned and
managed by the Society of Antiquaries
at Burlington House
in London.
Groups are welcomed on Thursdays
(and during public open days).
