In April 2015 he received an award
from the mayor in recognition of his
volunteering. All his activities are
part of an overriding urge to give
back to the community, a nod to
his fellow Cartonians. “I know lots
of people in Carterton,” he said.
“And one of the things I really
want to say to them is ‘thank you’.
I want to thank everybody who
knows me because they’ve been
so supportive. And that’s from the
bottom of my heart.”
I left Julian’s Corbett Road home after
a conversation lasting over an hour. I
had a bit of a look at myself. I moan when
the tonic runs out, sigh as the lights turn
red and believe that, as someone giving
up smoking, I qualify as a victim. And
I’d just spoken to a man with actual
hardship…who just gets on with it
without grumbling; someone who
darts across Carterton on a scooter
adorned at Christmas time by fairy
lights, Weimaraner at his side,
enriching the lives of others. Time to
wake up and smell the coffee – and
realise that some go through real pain
in order to make a cup of it.
