Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau have made
history by becoming the first ever same-sex
marriage in France. A step ahead of the UK, France
legalised same-sex marriages despite months of
mass street demonstrations, which at times required
intervention by riot police. It took 172 hours of
heated debate for parliament to finally vote in
favour of opening up marriage to all sexualities.
The ceremony took place amid strong security and
the couple will continue to be accompanied by
bodyguards for some time. Only moments before
the couple were due to arrive, five anti gay-marriage
protesters tried to enter around the back of the town
hall building in Montpellier where the marriage was
taking place. There were also anonymous calls to
the town hall threatening violence. However, their
plan failed and the couple peacefully walked down
the aisle to Nat King Cole’s L.O.V.E.
The couple have long had the ambition to become
the first same-sex couple to tie the knot and when
Women’s Miniter Najat Vallaud-Belkacem visited
Montpellier last year, she asked if the couple would
like to fulfil their dream. It took less than a minute
for both to decide to go through with the ceremony,
despite the obvious threats from anti-gay protesters.
Autin is a well-known gay rights campaigner and
met Boileau online in 2006. At their wedding were
200 friends and family, 300 guests from activist
groups and 130 journalists, making it quite a packed
venue. After saying their vows, the couple walked
out to Frank Sinatra’s Love and Marriage.
