It’s Stonewall’s tenth annual list of
Britain’s Top 100 gay-friendly employers
and a lot has changed in that time. A
decade ago, six of the employers who
entered refused to be named publicly.
Now a place in the coveted Top 100 is
more fiercely sought after than ever.
But Stonewall remain all too aware that
there’s much more to do. Their recent
YouGov polling showed that in the last
five years 2.4m people of working age
have witnessed homophobic bullying at
work. It also shows that over a quarter of
lesbian, gay and bisexual people are not at
all open to colleagues about their sexual
orientation.
That’s why Stonewall have just launched
a new campaign to tackle homophobia
in Britain’s workplaces. Campaign
posters will appear on nearly 650 buses
in London, Cardiff and Edinburgh as
well as in 4,000 London Underground
carriages. The campaign features workers
from across various careers– including
construction, footballers, priests, policing
and firefighting – with the simple
message: ‘One is gay. If that bothers
people, our work continues’.
For more information about how you or
your workplace can get involved visit
the website or join the conversation
on Twitter and Facebook by using
#LotsToDo hashtag.
This year
s winner is Gentoo who
ve shown a fantastic
commitment to supporting their lesbian, gay and bisexual
staff. There were also impressive performances from
organisations like Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, IBM
as well as from the Army, Navy and the Ministry of Defence.
