Just over twelve months ago Natural Resources Wales came into being and
began its work ensuring that Wales’s natural resources are maintained, enhanced
and used in a sustainable way. It has been a positive beginning for the natural
environment in Wales, which forms such a vital part of our economy and
culture.
The new organisation has made the most of opportunities to create an inclusive
place where staff can be confident in being themselves at work. Staff have
established a LGBT+ network, which has been working with the organisation
to develop equality and diversity plans and policy. The partnership also made
a successful submission to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, within five
months of its launch in April 2013.
Members of the LGBT+ network will be meeting later in the year to feedback
their views on the progress of the network and its future. Members will also
get to meet their committee, which has representatives for specific sexual
orientations and geographical areas. Derek is the network’s deputy, and bisexual
lead, and Emily is our south east Wales contact for the network and gay woman
lead, both sit on the network committee.
Derek Carpenter, Senior Permitting Officer said: “Being
bisexual within Natural Resources Wales just doesn’t matter,
and that’s how it should be. I feel valued, proud to be a part of
our network and able to be happily out at work.”
Emily Williams, Customer Services Advisor said: “It’s great being
able to work in a place where my sexuality is not just accepted,
but embraced, and where I not only feel comfortable in my own
skin, but am able to be part of encouraging this environment for
everyone.”
Natural Resources Wales will be out and about this summer supporting Swansea
Pride on the 28th June, and North Wales Pride on the 5th July. This year we
will be focusing on promoting the many opportunities Wales provides to enjoy
the great outdoors, including attractions such as National Nature Reserves,
mountain bike trails and visitor centres.
