Unite Wales is putting equality at the
heart of our work as a union, working hard
for equality, diversity and social justice
– whether that be fighting for a better
deal and an end to discrimination in the
workplace, protecting and supporting all of
our communities or ensuring our members’
voices are heard in wider Welsh society.
Our commitment to a fairer future for all is
shaped and strengthened by our trade union
values and principles. As an out woman
working for a trade union I am proud and
privileged to be play just a small part in this
movement for equality, fairness and justice.
We take our work forward through both
campaigning and our equality structures,
supporting LGBT members and LGBT
support groups. Our Unite Equality
Workplace Reps and Equalities Committees
work together with our Wales Equalities
Officer, Belinda Robertson to fight back
against discrimination and for the rights of
our LGBT community in Wales.
But what about being a LGBT trade
union activist? Martyn Jones a Unite rep
and member of the Unite Wales LGBT
Committee sums it up, “I have been a
member of a trade union all my working life
but until recently have not been an ‘active’
member – this changed just last year when I
decided to stand for election as an Equalities
Representative. Equality issues affect all of
us in the LGBT community and there is no
doubt that Unite has been effective in fast
forwarding equality rights. Today, we are
poised now as never before to achieve full
equality on many fronts and I know Unite
will continue to be an active and progressive
campaigning organisation and be inclusive
of the whole LGBT community. This is
something that I am very, very proud to be a
part of.”
Unite is the union for you, why don’t
you join us? Together we are stronger.
