Swansea University has climbed a considerable 99 places in this year’s Stonewall
Workplace Equality Index, and is now ranked at number 36 out of 100 – placing
Swansea second of all employers in the Higher Education sector.
Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index is the
definitive list showcasing the best employers for
lesbian, gay and bi staff. The list is a powerful
benchmarking tool used by employers to create
inclusive workplaces. Now in its twelfth year,
it celebrates the pioneering efforts leading
organisations to create inclusive workplaces.
This is the fifth consecutive year that Swansea
University has taken part, and 2015 attracted
over 400 entries, the highest number since the
Index was first launched in 2005.
Andrew White, Director, Stonewall Cymru,
said: “Swansea University and all of those
employers that secured a place in the Stonewall
Top 100 Employers 2016 list performed
fantastically this year. With 12 Welsh
employers in this year’s index and 4 new entries
into the Top 100, Wales is punching above its
weight in supporting LGBT equality. Making
the list is a huge achievement and I’d like
to thank all of those organisations for their
continued efforts to ensure that their lesbian,
gay, bi and trans staff feel comfortable to bring
their whole selves to work and are accepted
without exception”.
This is an amazing achievement and one that
reflects the hard work and commitment of
many staff and students across the University.
It is a tribute to our LGBT community, who
have put in an incredible effort to achieve this
award, and it reinforces Swansea University’s
reputation as a place where diversity is
welcomed and celebrated.
