Bourne Free is Bournemouth's LGBT Pride
Festival. It is an annual celebration of all
diversities that live in Bournemouth and the
constant strive towards universal equality for
all through entertainment and awareness.
Why did Bourne Free start?
Bourne Free was originally set up in 2004
when a far right organisation was due to
come to Bournemouth and preach that
homosexuality was wrong. Many prominent
figures and active members of the gay
communities in the area came together to
organise an event in the Lower Gardens
to protect the gay communities from the
bigots and keep them together for a day of
celebration, rather than of hostility.
The event included entertainers performing
at The Bandstand to support diversity, a
balloon release with a 2 minute silence for
victims of hate crime and Bournemouth’s
first Gay Pride march. By the end of the
day those that had come together just a
few weeks before the preachers came to
Bournemouth, the Bourne Free Committee,
felt that they could have done even more if
they had more time.
It was decided that the committee would
get back together and repeat the event
every year, but as an official charity with
designated roles. Bourne Free would
become an annual celebration in the heart
of Bournemouth for everyone to see the
diversities in the community and to enjoy a
variety of entertainment. In 2006, the title
of the event was changed to the Bourne Free
Pride Festival.
The Bandstand
Our bandstand event starts after the Parade
at 1pm and finishes at 5pm. It is located in
the Lower Gardens of Bournemouth, just
down from the famous balloon. We call this
our “family day”.
This is where we encourage local people and
visitors to Bournemouth to help us celebrate
our weekend. We have numerous acts on
the bandstand performing to the crowd. It
is a marvellous way of all the communities
getting together and having fun.
The Triangle
Following on from the success of last year,
the main arena will be back bigger and
better than ever before.
Again we will be situated in the Triangle
and the arena will consist of main stage,
Bourne Free bar, VIP bar and a choice of
food outlets.
There will also be some ground/circus
acts amongst the crowds for added
entertainment. Last year we saw over 3,000
people in the main arena and this year we
hope to attract even more. The atmosphere
is always second to none and we can’t wait
to enjoy another amazing event.
The arena will open at 1pm, which coincides
with the parade ending outside the main
entrance, and will go on until 11pm. This
year’s line-up is shaping up to be the biggest
and best we’ve had to date. We can already
announce that the ‘Bourne Free goes to the
movies’ main stage will be opened by drag
legend and film/tv star, the wonderful ‘Dave
Lynn’.
