Diversity integral part of new environment body for Wales
On 1 April this year, Natural Resources Wales
took over the functions of the Countryside
Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales
and Forestry Commission Wales, as well as some
functions of Welsh Government. We will be
the largest sponsored body in Wales, with over
2,000 staff working to help make sure the natural
resources we have are maintained, enhanced and
used in a sustainable way.
It is a new beginning for the natural environment
in Wales, which is a vital part of its economy and
culture. As part of this new beginning, there has
been a great opportunity to create an inclusive
place where staff can be confident in being
themselves at work.
We have already established an LGBT Network
to focus on equality and diversity, the first staff
network in the new organisation. We’re looking
at new ways of how the LGBT Network can
support staff in work and beyond.
When we launch in June, each and every member
of staff will be invited to either become a member
or a friend. Friends of our Network can show their
support and get involved, as well as get support or
advice on LGBT issues within their own family
and friends outside of work. We are also getting
out there this summer and are looking forward to
being a part of Swansea Pride on the 29th June,
and North Wales Pride on the 27th July.
These events extend our reach outside the
organisation to both urban and rural families
and communities, and allow us to highlight
the work we do. Dawn Beech, from Natural
Resources Wales said: “As well as the diverse
natural ecosystems we manage we want the new
organisation to be a place where staff are confident
in being themselves, and where the diversity of
our staff reflects that of our customers.”

Dyfed-Powys Police highlighted its support for
IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia
and Transphobia) again in 2013. Police officers
and staff wore the ‘Zero Tolerance Stop Homophobia’
orange ribbons, and rainbow flags were flown above
police buildings across the Force area. A press release was
also issued to local papers and internally to staff.
By recognising IDAHO and displaying the orange ribbons,
Dyfed Powys Police takes its mission to tackle homophobia,
transphobia or any other form of hate crime seriously.
Staff will continue wearing the ribbons throughout
the year to demonstrate a zero tolerance approach
to homophobia.
